Vitrac is a special, welcoming place to live, with numerous accommodation facilities. A visit to its little 12th-century church is not to be missed.

The road along the Dordogne takes you past a golf-course to the village of Montfort, dominated by a superb château high above the river.

Throughout its history, it was knocked down and rebuilt several times, the inevitable fate of a building occupying a strategic location.

Location map

Among those who had it destroyed was the notorious Simon de Montfort, sent down by the King of France to crush the Cathar "heretics" then prevalent in the region. (There’s no connection between his name and that of the village - purely a coincidence.) The oldest part of the present château dates from the 15th century. From a viewpoint a few kilometres farther down the road towards Carsac, you have wonderful views over a huge loop in the river, as well as the walnut plantation at Turnac (on the left bank) and the château itself, on its rocky spur looming over the Dordogne.
